Book Off Manga 9

Matsumoto Taiyou, No. 5 1, Big Comics Ikki

It’s no surprise that Matsumoto Taiyou admits to European influences on his style; at first glance I thought this was by Moebius. As a result, this tale of a future Earth is like no other manga I’ve seen, with a strange crinkly line and distinctly French/Belgian style. Airships, deserts and forests, futuristic cities and homes, some guy in a rabbit costume, another with a pet sheep, another with a giant afro. Not much violence in this first volume, but plenty of visual impact. It’s large-format with some pages in colour, and was a snip at 60% off.

18.5×25.5 cm, 2002, ¥819.
