The Black Hole

This dearth of posting is deceptive, because elsewhere I’ve actually been blogging like it’s 1999. It’s all been for the course, though, and for a smaller (or at least more private) audience.

Tuesday was the first day of semester, and was so busy that I completely forgot it was Talk Like a Pirate Day. I made up for it by cursing like an old sea dog all day at some technical difficulties that beset us at exactly the wrong time. Makes you realise how finely balanced all these different interlocking systems can be, and how much of a hostage to their fortunes you are when teaching online. I didn’t particularly want to realise that, though, when there was work to be getting on with. But we got by, and it’s shaping up well apart from that. I won’t discuss it much here, but you can assume that all these gaps between posts mean I’m discussing stuff there.

Jane came back from her week in Iceland with some stunning photos to make me jealous. Given my fondness for remote and rugged landscapes, it looks like exactly my kind of place. We’ll just have to go back together one day when beginnings of term and citizenship applications aren’t in the way. (Sent off the latter on Wednesday, by the way. The long wait begins.)

I’ve been meaning to catch up on my reviews of books, music, and especially movies, but the demands of work mean it just isn’t going to happen. Guess it’ll have to wait for the end-of-year best ofs. Still a few surprises up my sleeve, though, so stay tuned.
